Newlands spot on in cup win against Valley

On Sunday, Newlands defeated Valley 5-4 in the Scarborough and District Sunday FA Cup after the scores had been locked at 1-1.

Newlands went in front on 20 minutes when Brad Rowley was brought down in the area and Zac Hansen scored the penalty.

However Valley replied in the second half with Harry Ward netting the finish after a lovely Valley team team move.

Newlands won 5-4 on penalties through efforts from man of the match Mark Wade, Hansen, Rowley, Ryan Matson and Ben Luntley, Valley’s Sam Doyle having his shot saved by the stand-in keeper Shem Atkinson.

Newlands player-boss Dan Sheader said: “We were the team in control in the first half but we never came out in the second in our worst team performance so far this season but we got the win and that’s the main thing.”

Valley boss Ben Kristensen said: “ I would like to give credit to all my players. With some players missing the young lads stepped up and I thought we were unlucky to win in normal time.

“Callum Randerson was our man of the match in midfield. Credit goes to Newlands for seeing it out and we wish them the best in the next round.”

Cayton Corinthians lost out 6-5 on penalties after a 3-3 home draw against York Medics in the NRCFA Sunday Challenge Cup second round match.

In their first game back after lockdown the home side started the cup encounter well but an error saw the visitors take the lead against the run of play.

The villagers had a host of chances to equalise in the first half but their lack of a cutting edge in the final third play let Steven Frederiksen’s side down.

Cayton made some changes at the interval and these switches soon paid dividends as Jamie Taylor’s goal-kick found it’s way to veteran forward Paul Mills who made it 1-1.

The home side then conceded a cheap free-kick near the corner and poor marking gifted York Medics another lead against play.
